WOMANTRA stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and the struggle for racial justice in the United States and across the African Diaspora. In this moment, we hold space for the memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Nina Pop and the countless lives lost to police brutality and state violence against Black and Brown Americans.
We recognize this movement, founded by three Black women, is shaped by a long history of white supremacy and oppression in order to uphold patriarchal and capitalist interests and control, which has its roots in the brutal enslavement of our African ancestors for more than 4 centuries.
We share in the pain felt globally as Black people everywhere experience/ witness police violence, institutional racism, mass incarceration, the criminality of blackness and poverty and the unprincipled and systemic indifference to our demands for justice.
We acknowledge that colonialism and its strange fruit are not confined by any borders and there is much work to be done at home- in our country, our communities, our families and within ourselves to make meaningful, lasting change.
As an intersectional feminist organization we are committed to liberation that is anti-racist, anti-imperialist and anti-colonial. We aim to center the voices and experiences of the most marginalized in our society and continue to lift up all those in the struggle.
For anyone interested in attending an action to stand in solidarity join us in the Queen’s Park Savannah opposite the US Embassy Monday 8th June, 2020 at 1:00pm- 4:00pm. Check #TTBLM on social media for updates.
