Rapist, Kidnapper At Large in Siparia /Rape, Abduction suspects detained
WOMANTRA stands in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault. We also recognise the added layer of citizenship and ethnicity involved in this particular case. Venezuelan women are under attack in this country on multiple fronts. From misogynistic discourse encoded in soca music to physical acts of violence and the exploitation of their labour due to immigration status, we recognise and grimace at the ways that these women suffer.
In June 2019 a Venezuelan woman was kidnapped at a fake job interview and taken to another location where she was sexually assaulted. In May of this year another woman was at her home with her partner where they were robbed and she was sexually assaulted. There needs to be a shift in consciousness among the local population that not only acknowledges these crimes as a legitimate threat to our national security but also demands justice for these individual women and their families..
In a recent JSC hearing, startling statistics were shared with the public, revealing that there were 484 complaints of sexual assault against immigrants over a 6-year period, resulting in 0 perpetrators being held accountable for the sexual exploitation of these women. Furthermore, the 2019 CARICOM Human Trafficking study revealed that there were police officers collaborating with human traffickers. This was evidenced by one of the traffickers interviewed having the contact number for a police constable. We see the continuation of this disturbing trend in this most recent case, where one of the suspects held in connection with the most recent attack is a Special Reserve Police officer.
So our question today is, Where is Gary Griffith? Why hasn’t he come out and addressed the public in light of these ghastly crimes against the Venezuelan community living in Trinidad and Tobago? We continue to demand that the TTPS be held accountable for their (in)action and silence in times of great significance.
We continue to hope that one day the Media Association and the Trinidad and Tobago Publishers and Broadcasters Association will hold their membership accountable for publishing distasteful imagery exploiting the pain of women to sell newspapers and gain traction on the interwebs.
We call on our fellow NGOs, social media and news outlets to cease and desist from publishing the names of survivors of sexual assault. Their identity should be protected until they decide their course of action and whether or not they wish their identity and story to be in the public domain.

WOMANTRA se solidariza con las sobrevivientes de agresión sexual. También reconocemos el factor adicional de ciudadanía y etnia involucrado en este caso. Las mujeres venezolanas están siendo atacadas en este país en múltiples frentes. Desde el discurso misógino codificado en la música soca hasta los actos de violencia física y la explotación de su trabajo debido a la situación migratoria, reconocemos y condenamos las formas en que sufren estas mujeres.
En junio de 2019, una mujer venezolana fue secuestrada en una entrevista de trabajo falsa y llevada a otro lugar donde fue agredida sexualmente. En mayo de este año otra mujer se encontraba en su casa con su pareja donde fueron asaltados y ella fue agredida sexualmente. Es necesario que haya un cambio de conciencia entre la población local que no solo reconozca estos crímenes como una amenaza legítima a nuestra seguridad nacional, sino que también exija justicia para estas mujeres individuales y sus familias.
En una audiencia reciente de JSC, se compartieron estadísticas sorprendentes con el público, que revelaron que hubo 484 denuncias de agresión sexual contra inmigrantes durante un período de 6 años, y 0 perpetradores han sido responsabilizados por la explotación sexual de estas mujeres. Además, el estudio de CARICOM de la trata de personas 2019 reveló que había agentes de policía que colaboraban con los traficantes de personas. Esto fue evidenciado por uno de los traficantes entrevistados que tenía el número de contacto de un agente de policía. Vemos la continuación de esta inquietante tendencia en este caso más reciente, donde uno de los sospechosos detenidos en relación con el ataque más reciente es un oficial de la Policía de Reserva Especial.
Ahora, nuestra pregunta es ¿Dónde está el comisionado de policía Gary Griffith? ¿Por qué no se ha dirigido al público sobre estos horrendos crímenes contra la comunidad venezolana que vive en Trinidad y Tobago?
Seguimos exigiendo que el TTPS deben responsabilizarse de su (in)acción y silencio en momentos de gran importancia. Seguimos esperando que algún día la Asociación de Medios y la Asociación de Editores y Locutores de Trinidad y Tobago responsabilicen a sus miembros por publicar imágenes ofensivas que explotan el dolor de las mujeres para vender periódicos y ganar atención en las redes.
A nuestras ONG compañeras, páginas de redes sociales y noticias para que cese y desista de publicar los nombres de sobrevivientes de agresión sexual. Su identidad debe estar protegida hasta que decidan su curso de acción y si desean o no que su identidad y su historia sean conocidos públicamente.
